A brand is a name or design that identifies one seller’s goods and services as distinct from those of other sellers.
Now the above definition is what I picked up from Wikipedia.
What I think is a brand?
For me, a brand is a way a product, a company, or a person is perceived by people who experience it. It’s not just a name or design or logo, it is the cumulative effect of all the assets we construct in our brain when we look at something,
Let’s do an exercise.
Think of a brand. Any brand. For example, I’ll take Apple because why not.
What is the brand we call “APPLE”?
It definitely isn’t the computers or the phones or the other cool stuff it sells. Those are the products Apple manufactures.
The immersive and sensational TV ads or the thrilling staged conferences are not its brand either. They might be close but they’re not.
Even its name and logo don’t encompass everything when we think about Apple, the brand.
It turns out that brand isn’t a “thing” in the literal sense of the word. It is intangible. You can’t touch it, or hold it or hear it.
Any company’s brand lives in the minds of people. The customers, the founders, the investors - anyone who experiences the company cultivates the brand in their minds.
This does not only apply to brands of companies. These brands may be personal, product, or service.
But, the crux of the matter is that brands are perceptions.
That is why everyone strives to maintain them.
And everyone strives to exemplify them.
Anyone who doesn’t care about their brand will eventually lose.
That’s all for today.
See you in the next one.
Best,
Lokesh :)
